Sept. 3, 2006

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's soccer team snapped a three game skid with a 1-0 victory over Manhattan College today, September 3 at Stiles Field. With the win, the Panthers improve to 1-3, while the jaspers, at 0-4, are still searching for their first win of the season.

Adelphi controlled the flow of play in the first half, out shooting Manhattan, 10-5. The Panther pressure finally paid off in the 30th minute when Keith Rock (Dublin, Ireland) sent a ball from the right corner to a waiting Rob Philippou (Manhasset, N.Y.). Philippou corralled the ball eight yards from the Jasper goal, turned and fired a shot past Manhattan goalkeeper John Ciano, giving Adelphi a 1-0 edge.

With the Panthers clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Jaspers came out of halftime firing and actually out shot Adelphi 5-4 in the second half. Manhattan's best chance came off of a free kick from 25 yards out, but was turned away by Michael Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.).

Hurley collected his first shutout and victory of the season, making three saves, while Ciano kept Manhattan in the game with three saves of his own.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, September 9 when they play host to Fairfield at 1:00 pm on Stiles Field.
