Women's Soccer Handles Dowling, 3-1

Sept. 17, 2006

Box Score

Oakdale, N.Y. - Junior Denise Auer (Holbrook, N.Y.) netted two of Adelphi's three goals as the women's soccer team topped Dowling College, 3-1, in Saturday afternoon conference action. The Panthers improve to 3-0-2 and 1-0-0 in the ECC, while the Golden Lions drop to 2-5 and 0-2.

Both teams fought hard as they battled for the first goal. The Panthers would connect in the 10th minute as freshman Caitlin Morrison (Beacon, N.Y.) dribbled in the box for a direct shot past the Golden Lion goalie Lyndsay Staunton (Dublin, Ireland). Minutes later, Auer capitalized on a corner by sophomore Amanda Herrera (Lafayette, CO), as she sent a header into the net for a 2-0 Panther cushion. Auer rounded out the first half scoring off a rebound as she netted her second goal of the game and the season.

Adelphi continued its strong play in the second half, holding a 9-2 shot advantage over Dowling. However with less than five minutes remaining in the game Stephanie Cotter (Ridge, NY) fired one to the far right side off a pass from Lauren Carbonaro (Massapequa Park, NY) to prevent the shutout.

Junior Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had one stop for the Panthers while Staunton made 11 saves on the day for the Golden Lions.

Adelphi returns to conference action on Wednesday, September 20, as they host C.W. Post at Stiles Field at 4:00 p.m.
