The Adelphi volleyball team and American International College (AIC) opened their season with wins on the first night of the Adelphi September Showcase. The Panthers posted a 3-0 win over Philadelphia Biblical, while AIC took care of Southern Connecticut State University 3-1.
Match One
AIC took three of the four games, but Southern Connecticut won the first game 30-26, putting AIC in an early 1-0 hole. The second set was close with AIC coming out on top, edging the Owls 30-28. The Yellow Jackets then took control taking the last two sets 30-25 and 30-13 to wrap up their first win of the season.
The Owl's Kierstin Pry led the team with 15 kills and chipped in nine digs. Teammates Manjit Chase and Ashley Coombs tallied 16 and 12 assists respectively. On the Yellow Jacket's side, Zane Berzina had a match-high 19 kills to go along with 14 digs. Briana Smith and Charisse Trotman each added 12 kills of their own. Also helping AIC in their victory was Jessica Provan with 46 assists.
Match Two
Adelphi's match with Philadelphia Biblical started off as a back and forth affair, until the Panthers hit their grove, reeling off 14 straight points to move out to a 1-0 edge with a 30-14 win in game one. Games two and three ended with identical 30-20 scores, giving Adelphi a 3-0 win.
Lauren Flanagan (Boulder, CO) led all players with 14 kills and added seven digs. Teammates Kelsey Hackett (Alta Loma, CA) and Kelly Campbell (Hicksville, N.Y.) chipped in 12 and 10 kills respectively. Brittany Addeo (Minden, NV) added a match-high 35 assists.
Adelphi will open the second day of action at 9:00 am against AIC, while Southern Connecticut will take on Philadelphia Biblical at 11:00 am.
