righthander Danielle Stallone allowed four hits and struck out six,
leading No. 1 seed C.W. Post to a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Adelphi in the
Winner's Bracket final of the 2006 NYCAC Softball Championships. With
the win, C.W. Post advances to the championship game on Sunday at noon
at C.W. Post. The Pioneers will take on the winner of Adelphi vs. No. 3
Queens, which gets underway at 10 a.m.
C.W. Post (41-10) built a 2-0 lead on an RBI walk by sophomore right
fielder Samantha Yodowitz in the second inning and a squeeze bunt by
senior center fielder Kelsey Walker in the fourth. Adelphi (31-15)
responded with a solo home run by freshman shortstop Jessica Vogt, who
went 3-for-3 in the game, in the sixth, but Stallone bore down to record
the final four outs to earn the complete-game victory.
Sophomore Julie Schaper (11-5) pitched 3.1 innings allowing two earned runs, while striking out three and walking four. Senior Carla Buonviaggio allowed one hit, while striking out three and walking one in 2.2 innings in relief.
In the first game, New Haven rallied for two runs in the seventh on a
two-run double by Jessica Medina to send the game into extra innings.
But Queens right fielder Maria Scalisi singled in catcher Lucy Oswald
with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Queens then erased a 2-1 deficit with a four-run third inning which
started on a leadoff home run by second baseman Jay Henck. Oswald, Henck
and DP Jessica Paparella had two hits each. Pitcher Victoria Forsythe
came on in relief in the fourth inning following a home run by STAC
catcher Amanda Brown which cut the Knights' lead to 5-3. Forsythe
allowed just one hit the rest of the way, striking out three and walking
none to earn the victory.
