The Adelphi University softball team finished the regular season with a non-conference sweep of Pace University, posting identical 1-0 scores. The Panthers improve to 30-14, while the Setters drop to 18-27.
Both games were ultimately decided in the second inning. In game one, senior Amy Delmore accounted for the winning run as she reached on a fielder's choice then advanced to second on a passed ball. Junior Kristina LoCastro reached on an error by Pace which drove home Delmore. Senior Carla Buonviaggio (9-4) pitched the four-hitter, striking out five.
In game two, freshman Diana DiPiano doubled in the second inning before advancing to third on a sac bunt by junior Alana daSilva. DiPiano scored on an error by the shortstop. Sophomore Julie Schaper (10-4) gave up just three-hits in the win, striking out seven along the way.
This marks the sixth time that Adelphi has completed a 30+ season since becoming a Division II program in 1995. In 2003 the Panthes set a school record with a 35-17 finish while advancing to the NCAA Regionals.
The Panthers begin the NYCAC Tournament on Friday, May 5, hosting the first round at Ficke Field. As the number two seed, Adelphi receives a first round bye in the double elimination tournamentand will face the winner of the #6 St. Thomas Aquinas vs. #3 Queens College game at 4:00 p.m.
