Baseball Downs The Flyers

April 9, 2006

Game One/Game Two

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi baseball team took both games of a double header from visiting Mercy by identical 9-2 scores. The Panthers scored a combined five runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to secure a 9-2 win in game one. Adelphi scored three runs in the first, on their way to another 9-2 win in the second game. With the sweep, Adelphi improves to 9-14 overall and 6-4 in conference action, while Mercy falls to 5-16 overall and 3-6 in the NYCAC.

Game One
Tom Cali (Shirley, N.Y.) opened the game with a triple and immediately scored on a Bobby Calca (Elmont, N.Y.) grounder to short, giving Adelphi an early 1-0 edge. Mercy knotted the game at one in the top of the second, but the Panthers answered with a three run second innings to push their lead to 4-1.

The Flyers picked up another run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly, to pull within 4-2. However, that was as close as Mercy would get as Adelphi scored a combined five runs in the next three innings to secure a 9-2 win.

Chris Zinkiewicz (Massapequa, N.Y.) went the distance, pitching nine innings and striking out nine to collect the win. Steve Parisi allowed all nine Adelphi runs over five innings and was credited with the loss.

Game Two
The Panthers took control early in game two, scoring three runs in the first, two on a Brian Rath (Wantagh, N.Y.), to take an early 3-0 lead. The Panthers added a fourth run in the bottom of the second when Cali tripled to right field, scoring Mike Colonna (Staten Island, N.Y.).

That was more then enough run support for Mike Myers (Wantagh, N.Y.). Myers pitched 6.1 innings, striking out six to pick up the 9-2 win, while Frank Valeriano (Oceanside, N.Y.) pitched two thirds of an inning of scoreless relief.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, April 12 when they travel to West Haven, Connecticut for a showdown with New Haven.
