Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia) scored a career-high 10 goals and tied a career-high with 12 points, leading Adelphi to a 17-9 non-conference win over Pace. With the win the Panthers improve to 8-3 overall, while the Setters fall to 4-9 on the season.
Pace opened the scoring, taking a brief 1-0 lead on a Kenneth Lysik goal just 1:57 into action. Adelphi answered with three straight goals, two from Michael Gongas (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and one from Green, to take a 3-1 lead.
The Setters came back with two goals of their own to knot the game at three, with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter. But, with nine seconds left on the clock, Green found the back of the net, giving the Panthers a 4-3 lead heading into the second quarter.
In the second frame Pace again struck first, scoring just 43 seconds into the quarter to knot the game at four. Adelphi got goals from Green and Stephen Mortimer (Adelaide, Australia) to pull ahead, 6-4, before a goal from Ben Volen, pulled Pace within one, 6-5.
Then Green took over, scoring the games next six goals, during a span that begin with 2:02 to play in the second quarter and ended with 7:11 remaining in the third, giving Adelphi a 12-5 lead.
The Setters never recovered, falling 17-9. Adelphi held an advantage in shots (40-26), ground balls (31-22) and extra man goals (4-1).
Timothy Matheis collected 16 saves in the loss, while Brian Volpi (Lawrence, N.Y.) made nine saves, picking up his eighth win of the season.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 26 when they travel to Brookville, N.Y. for a 1:00 pm meeting with C.W. Post.
