Softball Handles Bridgeport

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team swept the University of Bridgeport, 6-3 and 4-0, this afternoon at Ficke Field. The Panthers remain undefeated at home with a 14-0 record and improve to 23-11 on the season and 10-2 in the NYCAC. The Purple Knights fall to 16-16 and 4-6.

Offensively, the Panthers were led by freshman Samantha Johnston who was 5-for-6 with four runs scored and one RBI. Freshman Jessica Vogt combined for a 4-of-6 performance with three RBI.

Game One
Adelphi rattled off four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Johnston scored on a double by junior Alana daSilva to start things off, followed by runs from Vogt and daSilva. Senior Amy Delmore accounted for the final run of the inning. The Panther pushed their lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning as sophomore Dely Francisco rounded home on a double from Johnston followed by an RBI single from Vogt.

The Purple Knights took advantage of three Panther errors to collect three runs on two hits in the sixth inning as Adelphi held on for the win.

NYCAC Pitcher of the Week Julie Schaper (8-2) picked up the win for her fourth straight victory. She gave up five hits, three runs, three earned while striking out three.

Adelphi had six runs on nine hits with three errors. Bridgeport had three runs on five hits with two errors.

Game Two
Johnston led off with a triple before coming home on a Schaper single to give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead. Vogt's double in the third inning drove home Johnston and Schaper to push the lead to 3-0. Delmore scored the final run, unearned, after singling to first then crossing home plate on a error by the Bridgeport centerfielder.

Sophomore Samantha Tilton (6-2) recorded the shutout victory, allowing five hits and striking out seven.

Adelphi had four runs on eight hits with two errors. Bridgeport had no runs on five hits with two errors.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 22, as they travel to Concordia College for a 12:00 noon doubleheader.
