Final Stats
Flushing, N.Y. -
The Adelphi baseball team used a nine run seventh inning to turn a 4-0 deficit into a 10-7 win in game one of a two game set with Queens on Saturday, April 15. In game two Michael Myers pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run and striking out eight to carry the Panthers to a 9-3 win and a sweep of Queens. With the wins Adelphi improves to 12-16 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
Game One
Adelphi ran into trouble in the bottom of the second inning, starter Chris Zinkiewicz (Massapequa, N.Y.) managed to get the first two outs without Queens doing any damage. Then Zinkiewicz walked a batter, loading the bases, which was followed by back-to-back two-run singles, giving the Knights a 4-0 edge.
After the second neither team would score again until the seventh, when the Adelphi offense came alive, scoring nine runs on just five hits. A Bobby Calca (Elmont, N.Y.) brought the first run across, followed by a Stephen Malvagna (East Meadow, N.Y.) double that scored two more runs, pulling Adelphi within one run, 4-3.
A Doug Anderson (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) sacrifice fly knotted the game at four, while a Pat O'Neill (Oakville, CT) two-run single gave the Panthers a 6-4 lead. Joe Maranino (Staten Island, N.Y.), who was hit by a pitch in his first at bat in the seventh, hit a three-run home run to give Adelphi a 9-4 cushion.
The Panthers gave up a run in the bottom of the seventh and two in the bottom of the ninth, but picked up a 10-7 win.
Five pitchers appeared on the mound for Adelphi and Chris Lewandowski (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) was credited with the win.
Game Two
Queens got on the board early again in game two, taking advantage of an Adelphi miscue to take an early 1-0 lead after one inning. After two scoreless frames the Panthers bats came alive again, scoring seven runs on six hits in the top of the fourth inning.
Ricky Nicholson (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Anderson singled in back-to-back runs followed by Nicholson reaching home on a wild pitch, giving Adelphi a 3-1 edge. Then Nick Testani (Williston Park, N.Y.) and Malvagna both doubled in runs, while Frank Valeriano (Oceanside, N.Y.) and Bill Melillo (Glenwood Landings, N.Y.) singled and doubled in the final runs, giving Adelphi a 7-1 lead.
From there Myers took over, pitching seven innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out eight in picking up his third win of the season.
Adelphi returns to action on Monday, April 17 when they close out their three-game season series with Queens in Garden City, New York at 3:00 pm.
