Junior Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) registered six goals and three assists to lead the #2 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to a convincing 15-8 conference win over the University of New Haven this afternoon. The Panthers remain perfect at 8-0 and 3-0 in the NYCAC, while the Chargers fall to 3-8 and 2-1.
UNH struck first as Jamie Metcalf scored on a free position shot just 1:39 into the contest. Lopez scored two of the next three Adelphi goals to pull the Panthers to a 3-1 lead. The Chargers answered back in the seventh minute to keep it close, 3-2. Junior Diana Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) scored next on a feed from freshman Rachel Ray (Rocky Point, N.Y.) , then Ray scored on an assist from Lauren Lopez to make it a 5-2 game. Both team traded goals with UNH closing to within one, 5-6, with consecutive free position goals. Over the remaining ten minutes, five different Panthers scored to close the half, 11-5.
The Chargers tried to close the gap with back-to-back goals in the opening minutes. Lauren Lopez accounted for three of Adelphi's four goals in the second half as the Panthers held on for the 15-8 win.
Ray had four goals and two assists. Diana Lopez and junior Meghan Blume (Bel Air, MD) had two goals apiece
Junior Allyson Murphy (Williston Park, N.Y.) made seven saves while Heather Gebhardt made 14 stops for UNH.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, April 19, traveling to St. Thomas Aquinas for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
