The Adelphi baseball team battled back from an early 9-1 hole and found themselves down 13-12 with a runner on second and the go ahead run at the plate at 6:30 pm in the bottom of the ninth inning. Unfortunately, Adelphi's luck could not hold, the Chargers struck out the Panthers final batter, securing a 13-12 win. With the loss Adelphi falls to 4-12 overall and 1-3 in the NYCAC, while New Haven improves to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
New Haven entered the top of the third inning with the score knotted at one and exploded, scoring eight runs on seven hits, including two run home runs by both, Michael Moras (Orange, CT) and Mike Reeder (Export, PA) to take a 9-1 lead. However, the Panthers battled back, putting five runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to pull within three, 9-6.
The Chargers added a run in the top of the fifth, while Adelphi got one in the bottom of the sixth, to enter the seventh inning with the score 10-7. In the top of the seventh, Chris Flynn (Milford, CT) tripled, scoring to runs, which made New Haven's lead 12-7 heading into the bottom of the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers turned the momentum, as Bobby Calca (Elmont, N.Y.) singled home a run and was then driven in by a Nick Testani (Williston Park, N.Y.) home run, cutting the Charger lead to just two runs, 12-10. Adelphi and New Haven then traded runs in the eighth to enter the final inning with the score 13-11 in favor of the Chargers.
Michael Myers (Wantagh, N.Y.) shut out the Chargers in the top of the ninth to give the Panthers a chance to come all the way back. Thomas Cali (Shirley, N.Y.) opened the inning with a walk and then stole second. With one out Testani moved Cali to third with a sacrifice fly, setting up Stephen Malvagna's (East Meadow, N.Y.) single, which drove in Cali and made the score 13-12.
But that was as close as Adelphi would get, the Panthers final batter struck out, stranding the tying run on second base.
Dan Gulino pitched six innings of relief and was credited with the win, while Chris Palladino (East Meadow, N.Y.) pitched two innings and picked up the loss.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, March 30 when they play host to Kutztown at 3:00 pm.
