The Adelphi baseball team committed seven errors and were out hit by visiting Bridgeport, 19-7, in an 18-7 conference loss. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 4-12 overall and 1-2 in the NYCAC, while Bridgeport improves to 3-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Bridgeport got on the board in the top of the first when Anthony Fiorillo (New Haven, CT) filed out to center, scoring Nathan Leva (Cambridge, MA), giving the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead. Bridgeport tacked on a second run in the top of the third when Fiorillo knocked in Leva for the second time.
Adelphi pulled to within one run, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth. The Panthers loaded the bases for Joe Maranino (Bronx, N.Y.), who was hit by a pitch, bringing home Brian Rath (Wantagh, N.Y.). Then Bridgeport's bats came alive, the Purple Knights scored 15 runs on 14 hits over the next four innings to take a 17-2 lead into the ninth, effectively ending the game.
Bill Melillo (Glenwood Landings, N.Y.) was credited with the loss, while Derek Cotoni (Chelmsford, MA) earned the win.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, March 29 when they play host to New Haven at 3:00 pm.
