Baseball Splits With Bridgeport

Bridgeport, CT - The Adelphi baseball team opened up their New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) schedule in Bridgeport, Connecticut on Saturday, March 25 with two games against the University of Bridgeport. Adelphi pounded out 17 hits in the first game to cruise to a 17-2 win, but fell 4-3 in the pitcher's dual that was game two. With the split the Panthers sit at 4-10 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while Bridgeport ends the day 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the NYCAC.

Senior Chris Zinkiewicz (Massapequa, N.Y.) got 17 runs of support in the first game but only needed three as he went the full nine innings, striking out 10, walking one and giving up just two runs, both unearned. Nick Testani (Williston Park, N.Y.) led the way for Adelphi on offense, going 4-6 with five RBI and three runs scored, while teammate Joe Maranino (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in four RBI's, three of which came off of a three run home run.

The second game started off the way the first ended with Adelphi taking a 1-0 on a Testani double that drove in Thomas Cali (Shirley, N.Y.). Then Bridgeport answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, knotting the game at one.

The Panthers upped the ante in the top of the second scoring two runs on a John Northrop (Watertown, N.Y.) double and a fielder's choice, to move out to a 3-1 lead. However the Purple Knights would not go quietly, getting one run in the bottom of the second, then knotted the game at three in the bottom of the third.

For the next three innings Chris Palladino (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Tony Danella dueled, with neither pitcher allowing a run. Then in the bottom of the seventh Bridgeport broke through and ended the game thanks to a fielding error by Adelphi, securing a 4-3 win.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, March 26 when they complete their three game set with Bridgeport in Garden City, New York at noon.
