Senior Dawn Anselmin (Lynbrook, N.Y.) registered four of her game-high seven goals in the first half to lead the No. 2 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to a 18-6 victory over Mercyhurst College. The Panthers remain perfect at 5-0, while snapping the Lakers (4-4) three-game win streak.
The Panthers struck first as senior Lisa Maggiotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) found the back of the net on a feed from Anselmin in the second minute of play. Anselmin followed with an unassisted goal to give Adelphi a 2-0 advantage. The Lakers kept it close as senior Kelsey French (Corning, N.Y.) scored on an assist by freshman Breanna Haggert (Skaneateles, N.Y.) in the fourth minute. Juniors Diana Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) and Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) combined for the next four Panther goals to push the lead to 6-1. Adelphi outscored Mercyhurst, 6-2, including two goals from freshman Jeannine Holz (East Meadow, N.Y.), to close out the first half, 13-3.
French opened the second half on an assist by freshman Jessie Horeth (Webster, N.Y.) to make it 13-4. Freshman Rachel Ray (Rocky Point, N.Y.) scored on a free position in the 37th minute followed by back-to-back goals from Anselmin for the Panthers largest lead of the day, 16-4. The Lakers managed to have the last word as Horeth shot past freshman Chrisitine Kozakiewicz (Ridgewood, N.J.) to close out the game, 18-6.
As a team, Adelphi outshot Mercyhurst 33-17, but were marred with 22 turnovers and five penalties.
Junior Allyson Murphy (Williston Park, N.Y.) made six saves in goal for the Panthers, playing 56:30 minutes for the win. Freshman Megan Foley (Garden City, N.Y.) picked up five saves for Mercyhurst.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, April 5, hosting Molloy College at 4:00 p.m.
