Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia) and Michael Gongas (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) provided plenty of offense, scoring a combined eight goals and picked up 10 assists, to help Adelphi to a 19-8 win over visiting Dominican College. With the win, the fourth ranked Panthers improve to 5-1 on the season, while Dominican falls to 1-5 overall.
Dominican opened the scoring in a slow first quarter when Owen Smith (Upper Saddle River, NJ) beat Panther goalie Brian Volpi (Lawrence, N.Y.) with 11:23 to play, putting the Chargers on top 1-0. Green answered back with his first goal of the contest, scoring off a feed from Gongas with 7:10 left in the quarter. Brady O'Malley (Syracuse, N.Y.) gave Adelphi the lead with just 11 seconds to play in the half off a Gongas assist.
The second quarter opened up much like the first with the Chargers coming out gunning. Dominican scored the first three goals of the second quarter, two by Joe Cobis (Riverhead, N.Y.), to claim a 4-2 edge. Then the Panthers erupted, scoring the games next nine goals. The run started in the tenth minute of the second quarter and ended in the ninth minute of the third period. During the run, Green scored four goals and added an assist, helping Adelphi to an 11-4 lead.
The Chargers stemmed the bleeding with a goal from Smith in the ninth minute to make the score 11-5, but Adelphi kept on coming, getting back-to-back goals from Matt Price (Melbourne, Australia) and Gongas to push the Panther advantage to 13-5. Adelphi added four more goals during the third and entered the fourth quarter with an insurmountable 17-7 edge.
Joe Assante kept the Chargers in the game during the early going and made 15 saves in the loss. Volpi teamed with Matt Billia (Baldwin, N.Y.) to make six saves in the win.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 1 when they play host to Bentley at 1:00 pm on Stiles Field.
