Junior Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) tallied four goals to lead the No.2 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to a 17-7 non-conference victory over St. Anselm College on a cold and blustery afternoon. The Panthers improve to 4-0, while the Hawks fall to 1-2-1.
The Panthers outshot the Hawks 19-5 in the first half as Lopez opened the scoring in the first 30 seconds of play on a feed from senior Dawn Anselmin (Lynbrook, N.Y.). Adelphi scored a total of five unanswered goals before St. Anselm got on board in the 23rd minute as sophomore Megan Ayers (Sayville, N.Y.) found the back of the net off an assist by senior Jillian Colonese (Guilford, Conn). Sophomore Kristen Schreiner (Plainview, N.Y.) made it 6-1 in the 27th minute as the Panthers held the lead going into the half.
Adelphi came out strong again in the second half, opening on a 6-0 rally, which saw junior Diana Lopez score twice, while dishing out two assists. Colonese stopped the run in the 37th minute on an unassisted play. Freshman Jeannine Holz (East Meadow, N.Y.) tossed in back-to-back goals to give the Panthers a 14-2 lead. Junior Lauren Glancy (Scituate, Mass.) scored three goals for the Hawks in the remaining minutes, but it was not enough as the Panthers held on for the win.
Junior Allyson Murphy (Williston Park, N.Y.) played the first 30 minutes in goal, collecting one save and the win. Freshman Christina Kozakiewicz (Ridgewood, N.J.) closed out the game with six saves. St. Anselm's Tiea Kurlowecz (Concord, Mass.) had eight saves.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 25, hosting Mercyhurst College at 11:00 a.m.
