Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's lacrosse team controlled the first half of action and leading 6-0 at the half on their way to a 13-3 victory. With the win the fourth ranked Panthers improve to 3-1 overall, while the visiting Purple Knights fall to 1-2 on the season.

Adelphi and St. Michael's played even for the first few minutes of action before the Panthers got on the board 4:14 into play, thanks to Michael Gongas (Port Jefferson, N.Y.). Jesse Corben (Merrimack) won the ensuing face-off, raced toward the Purple Knight net and found Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia), who found the back of the net, putting Adelphi ahead, 2-0, just 4:18 into the game.

The Panthers tacked on two more towards the end of the first quarter of play and led 4-0 entering the second period. In the second frame, Gongas notched his second goal of the game, to put Adelphi ahead, 5-0, while Matt Price (Melbourne, Australia) scored 3:59 into the quarter to give the Panthers a 6-0 cushion heading into the half.

The third quarter was all St. Michael's in the early going. Goals from Gregory Lazarus and Mike Boerma pulled the Purple Knights to within four goals, 6-2 with 4:21 remaining in the third. However, with 32 seconds on the clock Price took some wind out of St. Michael's sail, scoring Adelphi's seventh goal. Defenseman Chris Mahaffy (Huntington, N.Y.) completed the job when he scoped up a ground ball near midfield and charged toward the Purple Knight goal, beating St. Michael's goalie, Jeff Hannon, to give the Panthers an 8-2 lead with one period to play.

Adelphi got three goals in the first 1:44 of the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Green notched the first goal just seven seconds into the period, followed by Jonathan St. Jules (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 26 seconds later and Brendan Morgan (Bayside, N.Y.) 1:11 after that.

Hannon kept St. Michael's in the game, making 17 saves in the loss, while Brian Volpi (Lawrence, N.Y.) collected 12 saves and the win.

Adelphi returns to action on March 19 when they take on Limestone College at 1:00 pm in St. Paul's, Maryland.
