March 11, 2006

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - Senior Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia) tallied six goals and an assist, but it was not enough as top-ranked LeMoyne College handed Adelphi its first loss of the season, 17-10. With the win, the Dolphins improve to 2-0 on the season while the Panthers drop to 2-1.

LeMoyne struck first with back to back goals in the opening minutes to take an early 2-0 lead. Green rattled off two goals, the first assisted by sophomore James McNamara (North Merrick, N.Y.), to tie the game at 2-2 at 6:48 in the first quarter. Sophomore Mike McDonald tallied the second of his five goals on a man-down situation to give the Dolphins the advantage. Green answered with two more goals to give the Panthers their first lead, 4-3 at 12:52 in the second quarter. Over the next ten minutes, both teams traded goals. Trailing by one, junior Stephen Mortimer (Adelaide, Australia) had the last word with thirty seconds on the clock to knot the score at 6-6 going into intermission.

LeMoyne turned up its offense in the third quarter, rattling off 14 shots, compared with just four for Adelphi. A total of seven different Dolphin players scored in the quarter as their lead ballooned, 14-8. LeMoyne rattled off six consecutive goals before sophomore Michael Gongas (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) snapped the run on an assist from Green with 9:09 remaining. However, Adelphi was not able to sustain a rally as LeMoyne cruised to a 17-10 win.

Senior Brian Volpi (Lawrence, N.Y.) made 12 stops on 37 shots for the Panthers. Senior Jared Corcoran (Concord, N.H.) recorded the win for LeMoyne with eight saves.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, March 14, hosting St. Michael's at 3:30 p.m. at Stiles Field.
