Augusta, GA -
The Adelphi baseball team opened the season in Augusta, Georgia, holding Augusta State to just two runs through the first five innings of action, while scoring two of their own. But then Augusta State scored four runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings to secure a 6-4 win. With the loss the Panthers open the season 0-1, while Jaguars improve to 5-12.
Augusta State got on the board first, scoring on a throwing error by Stephen Malvagna (East Meadow, N.Y.) in the second. But Malvagna more then made up for his miscue when he blasted a two-run home run down the left field line to give Adelphi a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Jaguars evened the score in the bottom of the fourth when starting pitcher Bobby Lanigan (Staten Island, N.Y.) was taken deep by Garrick McGrath. With the score even at 2-2, Augusta State hung four runs on the Panthers in two innings on two singles and a double to take a commanding 6-2 lead after seven innings of play.
Adelphi rallied in the eighth, opening the inning with a single from Ricky Nicholson (Massapequa, N.Y.) and a double from Thomas Cali (Shirley, N.Y.), which moved Nicholson to third. Doug Anderson (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) drove Nicholson to score one run, followed by a Brian Rath (Wantagh, N.Y.) single to left that scored Cali, pulling Adelphi within two runs, 6-4.
Emilio LaPietra (Troy, N.Y.) was credited with the loss, while David Beumel was credited with the win.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 11 when they play games two and three of their four game set with Augusta State.
