The top-seeded Adelphi men's basketball team held visiting eighth seed St. Thomas to 26 percent shooting from the floor, producing their largest margin of victory this season, 73-34. With the win, the Panthers extend their win streak to a region best 16 games, while improving to 24-4 overall, the Spartans close out their season with a record of 8-13.
St. Thomas Aquinas struck first as Willis Kettrell (Rosedale, N.Y.) scored the games first bucket, 1:10 into action to give the Spartans their only lead of the game. Adelphi lead 7-4 with 15:24 remaining in the half when Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer to spark a 13-2 run that pushed the Panther lead to 14 points, 20-6.
From there Adelphi extended their lead to 20 points on a Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) three-pointer with 51 seconds remaining and would enter the locker room with a, 38-18, advantage.
The second half was more of the same as the Panthers continued to pull away from St. Thomas Aquinas. Adelphi took its largest lead of the game, and what would prove to be the final score, on a Sean Corrigan (Hicksville, N.Y.) made free throw with 24 seconds left in the game.
Kettrell was the only Spartan in double-figures, scoring 12 points and grabbing three rebounds.
Wagner led the Panthers with a double double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 14 misses. Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a game-high 17 points and Mike Mosby (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points and four rebounds.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 4 when they travel to Brookville, New York to face-off with fifth seeded Concordia in the semifinals of the NYCAC playoffs at C.W. Post.
