The Adelphi men's basketball team held host C.W. Post to just 44 points on 28 percent shooting to escape Brookville with a 71-44 victory. The win pushes Adelphi's current win streak to 10 games and was the eighth time this season that the Panthers have held an opponent to 50 points or less. With the win Adelphi improves to 18-4 overall and 14-1 in NYCAC action, while C.W. Post falls to 11-11 overall and 7-8 in the conference.
The early going was back and forth, as Adelphi and C.W. Post exchanged the early lead several times, with the Pioneers holding a two-point advantage, 10-8 with 14:18 to play. But a Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) three-point play sparked an Adelphi 13-5 run that gave the Panthers an eight point cushion, 21-13, with 8:04 remaining in the first half.
The Pioneers briefly cut Adelphi's lead to six points, before the Panthers pushed the bulge to 13, 30-17, on two Samuel Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made free throws with 4:50 left in the half. C.W. Post continued to battle, entering the locker room at halftime down just nine, 32-23.
C.W. Post opened the second half with an 11-4 run that cut the margin to just two points, 36-34, with 16:00 remaining in the game on a John Morris three-pointer. The Pioneers remained close, cutting the Panther lead to two again, before Adelphi responded with an 18-3 run to take a commanding 56-39 lead and put the game out of reach with 6:43 to play.
Raul Mercedes led the Pioneers with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Jonathan Schmidt chipped in 10 points.
Jenkins led three Panthers in double figures with 22 points, including hitting on four of six attempts from beyond the arc. Wagner added 11 points, while Sean Corrigan (Hicksville, N.Y.) contributed 10.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, February 11 when they travel to Westbury, New York to take on NYIT at 4:00 pm.
