The Adelphi men's basketball team held host Bridgeport to just 28 points on 27 percent shooting in the second half to pick up a 68-59 road win. With the victory the Panthers extend their win streak to nine games, while improving to 17-4 overall and 13-1 in the NYCAC. Bridgeport dropped to 15-9 overall and 11-3 in the conference with the loss.
Adelphi immediately jumped out to a 5-0 lead on an opening three-pointer from Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) and a jumper from Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.). Bridgeport battled back, briefly knotting the game at 13 on a Raul Natera lay-up at the 11:52.
But, the Panthers responded with an 11-2 run to take a nine-point lead with 8:13 on the clock. The Purple Knights clawed back into the game a second time, tying the game at 29 with 2:04 remaining on another Natera lay-up and took a brief two-point lead on Mike Rosario made free throws with 1:50 left.
The Panthers retook the lead heading into the locker room on a Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) three-pointer that made the game 32-31.
Blaize opened the second half the same way he closed the first, with a three-pointer that put pushed the Adelphi lead four points, 35-31. But, for a third time Bridgeport battled back, taking the lead, 43-41 on a three-pointer from Larry Hale.
Adelphi tied the game at 43, at the 13:04 mark on two made free throws from Blaize. The Purple Knights answered right back, pushing their edge to three points on a Natera jumper. The Panthers responded with a 12-2 run to take the lead for good and push their bulge to seven points, 56-49, with 6:26 on the clock.
Kevin Jefferys led three Purple Knights in double-figures with 17 points. Natera chipped in 10 points, while Rosario added 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Blaize led all scorers with 22 points, while Cummings chipped in a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sean Corrigan (Hicksville, N.Y.) also went for double-figures with 15 points and pulled down six rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, February 9 when they travel to Brookville, N.Y. for a 7:30 pm meeting with C.W. Post.
