Feb. 26, 2006

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's lacrosse team did not get on the scoreboard for the first 11:46, and found themselves trailing visiting tenth ranked Notre Dame de Namur 4-1 at the end of one quarter. However, the fifth ranked Panthers erupted in the second quarter, scoring four unanswered goals on their way to a 14-6 win. With the win, Adelphi rises to 1-0, opening the season with a win for the third year in a row, while the Argonauts fall to 0-1.

Notre Dame de Namur got goals from four different players in the first quarter, jumping on Adelphi in the first 15 minutes of action, 4-1. Despite the frigid conditions, the Panthers heated up in the second frame as Wes Green (Adelaide, Australia) got things going with an unassisted goal halfway through the period.

Brendan Morgan (Bayside, N.Y.) scored Adelphi's third goal less then a minute later to pull the Panthers to within one, 4-3. Michael Gongas (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) knotted the game at four, just 21 seconds after Morgan's goal and then gave Adelphi the lead for good with 1:20 remaining in the second quarter.

The last two periods were more of the same as the Panthers dominated the second half of action, out scoring the Argonauts 9-2 and out shooting them 21-12.

Mike Ferrari (Port Washington, N.Y.) made a game-high 12 saves to keep Notre Dame de Namur close, while Brian Volpi (Lawrence, N.Y.) picked up six saves, five of which came in the third quarter.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, March 7 when they play host to visiting St. Andrew's.
