Garden City, N.Y. -
Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) became the 30th player in Adelphi men's basketball history to reach 1,000 points when he converted the second of two free throw attempts with 18:00 minutes left in Adelphi's 70-47 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. With the win, the Panthers extended their win streak to a region best 15 games and concluded the regular season with a 19-1 mark in conference play and a 23-4 overall record. St. Thomas Aquinas closed out their season with an overall record of 12-16 and a mark of 8-12 in the NYCAC.
Adelphi and St. Thomas Aquinas were slow out of the blocks, combing for just 12 points in the first six minutes of action as the Panthers moved out to a four-point lead. From there it was all Adelphi as the Panthers closed the half with a 29-13 run to take a 20-point lead, 37-17, into the half.
The Panthers started the second half just as hot as they closed the first, going on a 16-5 run over the first 6:11 to take a commanding 31 point lead, 53-22. Three minutes later Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) converted a lay-up to give Adelphi their largest lead of the game, 60-26, with 11:01 remaining.
However, the Spartans continued to play tough, pulling to within 21 points with 1:25 on the clock on two Ahmed Allen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) free throws, before a Cummings three-pointer with 30 seconds left gave Adelphi their final margin of victory.
Willis Kettrell (Rosedale, N.Y.) was the only Spartan in double figures with 14 points.
Both Cummings and Sean Corrigan (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored 16 points in the win, Cummings grabbed six rebounds and handed out four assists, while Corrigan pulled down four misses.
The Panthers open up the first round of the NYCAC tournament on Wednesday March 1 when they host the eighth seed in the confines of Woodruff Hall.
