Senior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) poured in 18 of her 25 points in the first half as the Adelphi University women's basketball team topped visiting Concordia College, 80-61. The Panthers improve to 14-12 and 13-6 in the conference to clinch homecourt advantage in the NYCAC Playoffs next week.
Adelphi shot a convincing 52.8 percent from the field in the first half, but went 0-6 from three-point range. The game tied six times in the early minutes of the first half with the Clippers holding a 28-26 lead after two made free throws by Pam Karagiorgos at 9:43. Sophomore Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) tossed in two of her 18 points on the night which sparked a 11-0 Panther run with 3:36 left in the half. Adelphi led 42-32 at intermission.
The second half was more Adelphi has its lead ballooned to 25 points, 65-40, with 9:01 remaining. In contrast Concordia connected on just 8-of 25 attempts. Adelphi dominated the boards in the second stanza, grabbing 30 rebounds compared to just 10 for Concordia.
Karagiorgos led the Clippers (7-18, 6-13 NYCAC) with 19 points along with nine rebounds. Tiffany Daley had 12 points.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, February 25, hosting St. Thomas Aquinas in their regular season finale at 5:30 p.m. Saturday is also Adelphi's Senior Day and Alumni Day. The game will be broadcast on the internet via Broadcast Varieties.
