Women's Basketball Falls To New Haven, 78-71

West Haven, Conn. - Three players scored in double figures but it was not enough to push the Adelphi University women's basketball team past New Haven, falling 78-71. The Chargers improve to 18-6 and 14-3 in the NYCAC while the Panthers fall to 13-12 and 12-6 in the NYCAC.

Sophomore Gianna Smith recorded a game-high 25 points, including 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Sophomore Mary Lepore had 19 points and 10 rebounds and senior Carlyshia Hurdle added 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Chargers opened on a 12-0 run and never looked back. The Panthers trailed by as much as 18 points, 32-14, on two made free throws by Lauren Hood with 5:56 remaining in the first half. Adelphi managed to close the gap to within five, 35-40.

New Haven immediately took charge in the second half, opening on an 18-3 run capped by a Tristan Jackson layup with 13:05 left on the clock. Adelphi came to within six points on a basket from Hurdle with 11 minutes remaining, but were unable to sustain a lasting rally.

The Chargers were led by Adelina Gentry with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Jackson added 13 points.

Adelphi closes out the regular season at Woodruff Hall with the first of two games on Wednesday, February 22, hosting Concordia College at 7:30 p.m.
