The Adelphi University men's basketball team held host New Haven to just 28 percent shooting in the first half to build a 38-22 halftime lead on their way to a 66-49 victory. With the win the Panthers run their current win streak to 13 games, while improving to 21-4 overall and 17-1 in the NYCAC. The Chargers fall to 8-16 overall and 6-11 in the conference with the loss.
Adelphi jumped on New Haven from the opening tip, sprinting out to a 12-0 lead just 3:30 into the game. Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored seven of the Panthers 12 points during the run on two three-pointers and a made free throw.
The Chargers responded with an 11-4 run over the next 6:28 to pull within four points, 15-11, with 10:02 remaining in the first half. But Adelphi answered right back with a 12-2 run to take a 14 point lead, 27-13, with 5:21 left in the first.
New Haven could not cut Adelphi's lead to single digits as Ben Kenyon (Union, NJ) converted a lay-up as time expired in the first half to send the Panthers into the locker room with a 38-22 bulge.
The Panthers lead ballooned early in the second half to as much as 26 points, 53-27, before New Haven outscored Adelphi 22-8 over a span of 12:45 to pull within 12, 61-49, with 2:13 left in the game. But the Panthers closed the game with a 6-0 run to claim a 66-49 victory.
John Sullivan led the Chargers with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while teammate Jon Castaldi chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
Adelphi placed three players in double figures led by Blaize, who scored a game-high 16 points and handed out four assists. Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) added in 13 points, while Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) scored 10 points, grabbed five rebounds and picked up three assists.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 22, when they host Concordia at 5:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
