Box Score

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball suffered its third straight loss, falling to NYIT 66-60 on Saturday afternoon. The Bears avenge an early season loss to the Panthers and improve to 10-12 overall, 8-7 in the league. Adelphi falls to 12-11 on the season and 11-5 in the NYCAC.

Sopomore Mary Lepore led the Panthers with 20 points. Junior Betty Mendieta was the only other player in double figures with 10 points.

The first half saw Adelphi jump out to an early 11-6 lead behind five points from sophomore Jordan Gambino. The Bears responded with a 9-1 run, capped by a jumper from senior Danielle Simmons to take a 15-13 lead midway through the half. Lepore connected on a three pointer and freshman Lisa Manetta followed with a jumper to help Adelphi regain the lead, 17-15. The teams would trade leads until a lay-up from junior Anette Johansen with :35 seconds remaining broke a 24-24 and gave the Bears a 26-24 lead at the break.

The Bears increased their lead to six, 31-26,at the 15:55 mark, but Adelphi would step up their defense and hold the Bears to just two points for the next seven minutes. But the Panthers could only build a six point lead, and a three pointer from Johansen snapped the scoring drought and sparked a 20-9 run that would see NYIT build a 57-49 lead. Adelphi came right back and knocked down back-to-back three pointers from Lepore and Manetta, but four straight free throws from Simmons down the stretch gave NYIT some breathing room and the victory.

NYIT's Johansen led four Bears in double figures, while senior Krissy Porter had 14 on the night, graduate Sheena Howard added 13, and Bolling rounded out the group with 11 of her own.

Adelphi returns to the comfort of Woodruff Hall on Tuesday, February 14, hosting Dowling College at 5:30 p.m.
