The Adelphi men's basketball team held visiting Queens College to just 25 percent shooting for the game, while shooting 46 percent themselves to pick up a 70-54 win. With the win, the Panthers claim sole possession of first place in the NYCAC and run their current win streak to seven games. Adelphi rose to 15-4 overall and 11-1 in the conference, while Queens falls to 14-5 and 10-2.
The first 17 minutes of action were back and forth as neither team could manage more then a four point lead. But Bradd Wierzbicki (Maspeth, N.Y.) canned a three-pointer with 5:29 remaining to knot the game for the fifth time in the half at 21. Queens even took a one-point edge, 22-21, with just 3:37 on the clock on an Anthony Mauceri (Queens, N.Y.) made free throw.
Sean Corrigan (Hicksville, N.Y.) responded with a jumper that sparked Adelphi to a 9-0 run that ended the half and saw the Panthers enter the locker room with an eight-point bulge, 30-22. Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) closed the run with five straight points, including a three-pointer as the clock expired.
Adelphi came out firing in the second half, coming out of the gate with a 9-3 run to take a 14 point lead, 39-25, on an Aaron Cummings (Bay Shore, N.Y.) three-pointer. Queens would come back, pulling within seven on a Lance Hazel (Jamaica, N.Y.) three, but Adelphi responded with 14-3 run that gave the Panthers a 19 point, 56-37 edge and sealed the game.
Wierzbicki led all scorers with 18 points, while teammate Shaun Bertin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 11 points and eight rebounds. Clyde Chapman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also reached double-figures, scoring 10 points and pulling down seven boards.
Wagner led a Panther attack that placed four players in double figures with 16 points and nine rebounds. Corrigan added 12 points and seven boards, while Ben Kenyon (Union, NJ) and Cummings added 10 points apiece. Mike Mosby (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) also had a solid game, scoring eight points, grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds and blocking a career-high six shots.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, February 4 when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, New York for a 3:30 pm meeting with Mercy.
