Sophomore Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.) led a balanced attack with 23 points and 15 rebounds as the Adelphi University women's basketball team topped Queens College, 84-69, on Wednesday evening at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers extend their win streak to five games, improving to 11-8 and 10-2 in the NYCAC. The Knights drop to 9-9 and 5-6 in the conference.
A total of five Adelphi players scored in double figures with freshman Lisa Manetta (Glendale, N.Y.) chipping in 14 points. Senior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) and junior Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, N.J.) tallied 12 points a piece with Hurdle pulling down seven boards. Sophomore Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) contributed 10 points in the win.
Queens led early in the first half before the Panthers knotted the score at seven on a three-point basket by Manetta at 15:09. This sparked a 20-7 Adelphi run capped by a jumper from Hurdle, 27-14, with 6:45 remaining in the half. The Knights had the last word, as senior Erin White (Flushing, N.Y.) closed the gap to seven points, 41-34, in the final seconds.
Adelphi's lead ballooned to 14 points, 64-50, on a made three-pointer from Mendieta with 11:02 in regulation. The Panthers shot 51. 5 percent from the field in the half while holding the Knights to just 36.6 percent as they failed to connect on their last seven shots of the contest.
Brittany Faherty led Queens with 15 points and five rebounds. White had 14 points and four rebounds.
The Panthers return to action Saturday, February 4, as they being a four-game road trip at Mercy College. Tip off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
