The Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered a tough 85-53 loss against Bentley College in the first round of the Surf n' Slam Tournament at San Diego City College's Harry West Gymnasium Friday morning. The Panthers fall to 4-5 overall while the Falcons improve to 8-3 on the season.
Graduate student Dana Petersen was the lone Panther in double figures with 10 points. Junior Mary Lepore had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Bentley shot 50 percent in the first half to take a 35-22 lead into intermission. The Falcons upped their game in the second stanza, hitting 67 percent from the field to outscore the Panthers 47-31. In contrast, Adelphi was limited to 34.5 percent shooting and made just one of 11 three-point attempts. Bentley also dominated the boards, 42-28 as thirteen of the Falcons' boards came at the offensive end, resulting in 18 second-chance points.
Freshman center Dedra Pritchard led the balanced Bentley scoring attack, coming off the bench to drop in a career-best 17 points on seven-of-nine shooting. Combined, the top four Bentley post players totaled 46 points and were 80 percent from the field (20-25).
Adelphi returns to action tomorrow, December 30, at 10:00 a.m. (PST) as they face the loser of the Shippensburg/Shaw contest to be played later today.
