The Adelphi men's basketball team took on St. Michael's on December 29 in the first day of action at the Pace Holiday Classic. The Panthers led by one in the remaining seconds of overtime but a St. Michael's jumper as time expired sent the Panther's home with a loss. The defeat drops Adelphi's overall mark to 3-5, while St. Michael's improves to 7-4.
In the first 15 minutes of action neither team could take more then a four point advantage, but St. Michael's led 22-20 with 5:23 remaining and used a quick 7-2 run to take the largest lead of the half, 29-22. Adelphi clawed their way back, outscoring St. Michael's 8-3 to pull within three points, 32-30 at the half.
The second half was virtually a mirror image of the first, with neither team able to hold a lead. A Mike Mosby (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) lay-up with 2:41 remaining cut the St. Michael's advantage to one, 64-63. An Anthony Noble (Uniondale, N.Y.) jumper, followed by a Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) three-pointer with 36 seconds left in regulation gave the Panthers a four point lead, 68-64.
St. Michael's answered back with a three-pointer of their own, cutting the Adelphi edge to just one, 68-67, with 27 seconds to play. A Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) foul sent Brendan Mullins to the free throw line, where he converted one of two free throws to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period St. Michael's clung to a three-point lead, 77-74, with 1:34 to play. However a Mosby lay-up and a Blaize jumper gave Adelphi a one point lead with just five seconds on the clock. For the second time that night Mullins saved St. Michael's, converting a jumper as time expired to give St. Michael's the win, 79-78.
Mullins led St. Michael's with 21 points and five assists, while Brian Monahan chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds. Chris Cayole and James Sorrentine also reached double figures, scoring 15 points apiece.
Blaize led the Panthers with 21 points, while Mosby contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds. Noble and Sky Khaleel (Queens, N.Y.) added 12 and 11 points respectively.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, December 30 when they take on host Pace University in the second day of the Pace Holiday Classic.
