The Adelphi University women's basketball sufffered a tough 82-59 loss at the hands of The College of St. Rose on Saturday afternoon at Woodruff Hall. The Golden Knights improve to 3-0 on the season while the Panthers drop to 0-2.
For the second time this season Adelphi was led by junior Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) who tallied 17 points and six rebounds. Junior Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.) chipped in nine points and three rebounds, while sophomore Serita Lee (Freeport, N.Y.) came off to bench to lead the team with seven boards along with five points.
The Panthers got off to a good start as Smith scored the first three points. The Golden Knights went ahead for good, 6-5, on a jumper by senior Mary Lewis at 16:59. St. Rose outscored Adelphi 39-17 over the remaining minutes to lead 45-22 at the half. The Panthers struggled from the field in the first half, connecting on 7-of 27 attempts. In contrast, the Golden Knights were 16-of-26, or 61.5 percent. The Golden Knights dominated the boards, outrebounding the Panthers 23-12.
The Panthers shooting improved in the second stanza, as they matched the Golden Knights with 37 points a piece. They also stepped up their defense, grabbing 26 rebounds as compared to nine for St. Rose. After trailing by as much as 33 points, 57-24, at 15;54, the Panthers rallied on a 14-5 run sparked by a steal and basket from graduate student Dana Petersen. But the first half damage was too much for Adelphi to recover from as St. Rose coasted to victory.
The Golden Knights had four players in double figures, led by junior Lauren Revesz with 17 points. Freshman Elizabeth Buckley had 15 points off the bench while senior Linsey Onishuk and junior Emily Gottstein chipped in 10 points each.
Adelphi continues its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, November 21, as they host Merrimack College at 5:00 p.m.
