The Adelphi University men's basketball team suffered a tough 69-43 loss at the hands of Bentley College in its season home opener Wednesday night. The Panthers fall to 0-1, while the Falcons improve to 1-0.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead with senior Donnell Cummings accounting for four of the team's first seven points. Adelphi led, 11-5, at 15:46, in what would prove to be its largest lead of the night. Adelphi was plagued by poor shooting in the first half, as they connected on just 8 of 21 attempts, or 25.8 percent. Bentley faired much better, hitting on 40.9 percent of its shots.
The Falcons rallied back, outscoring the Panthers, 30-6, over the remaining minutes to go into the locker room with a 35-19 lead. The Panthers found themselves in early foul trouble in the first half, which the Falcons took advantage of, converting 14 of 19 attempts from the charity stripe.
The Panthers faired slightly better in the second half, shooting 40.9 percent from the field. However, the Falcons continued to play well as they led by as much as 28 points with 2:00 remaining in regulation. Bentley dominated the boards, pulling down 42 rebounds as compared with 26 for Adelphi.
Senior Mike Mosby was the lone player in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds. Senior Kimani Blaize added nine points and six boards.
The Falcons were led by Josh Correia who recorded career highs in both points and rebounds with 17 and 10, respectively.
Adelphi leads its all-time series against Bentley, 6-2. The only other loss to the Falcons came on November 20, 1999, as the Panthers fell, 79-72. Tonight's loss also marked the largest margin of defeat for Adelphi since January 11, 1997 when they lost to the College of St. Rose, 92-64.
Adelphi returns to action next Tuesday, November 21, as they host Bloomfield College at 7:30 p.m. as part of a non-conference doubleheader. The women take the floor first, taking on Merrimack College at 5:00 p.m.
