The Adelphi women's basketball team traveled to American International College on Wednesday, November 15 to open their 2006-07 season. The Panthers shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but still trailed 44-30 at intermission on their way to a 79-56 defeat. The loss drops Adelphi to 0-1, while ninth ranked AIC starts the season 1-0.
AIC jumped on the Panthers early, jumping out to a 10-2 lead just 3:30 into the game. Adelphi cut the AIC lead to six, 12-6, on a Gianna Smith jumper, but AIC scored seven unanswered points to take a 13 point lead, 19-6 with 12:46 to play in he first half. AIC took their largest lead of the half, 40-22, on a Lexanne Dickerson three-pointer with 4:20 remaining en route to a 44-30 halftime lead.
AIC used a quick 4-0 burst to pull out to a 20 point lead, 50-30, just two minutes into the second half. Mary Lepore answered the short AIC run with a lay-up, but 18 was as close as the Panthers would get, falling behind by as much as 30 en route to a 79-56 loss.
Kristin Boesenberg and Alexis Castro both scored 18 points, while Castro added seven rebounds for AIC. Alissa Rubino chipped in six assists and four steals.
Smith led the Panthers with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Lisa Manetta also reached double figures, scoring 10 points.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, November 18 when they play host to St. Rose at 3:00 pm in Woodruff Hall.
