Providence, RI -
The Adelphi men's soccer team took the field on Saturday, October 11 in the postseason for the first time since 1992 when they played Brown University in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The host Bears jumped on the Panthers early, scoring three goals in the first 15 minutes of action, a hole that Adelphi could not climb out of falling 4-1.
Andrew Daniels put Brown on the board with his first score just 11:13 into the game. Chris Roland crossed the ball from the right side, finding Daniels open for the header and a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute and a half later, a corner kick by Brian Joyce got tapped around to Elenz-Martin, who slipped the ball past Adelphi goalkeeper Michael Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.). The third strike came at 14:56 off another Daniels header, this one directly off a Joyce corner.
Daniels completed his first collegiate hat trick at 60:32, when he collected his own rebound and closed out Brown's scoring, putting the Bears ahead, 4-0. The Panthers lone goal was scored at 69:30, as Rob Philippou (Manhasset, N.Y.) finished a shot after the ball had bounced around in front of the net off a corner.
Jarrett Leech recorded six saves for Brown, while Hurley picked up six stops.
"We did not do well attacking, which kept pressure on our defenders." Head Coach Bob Montgomery said. "If we only give up one goal instead of three we could have regrouped and gotten back into the game."
With the loss, Adelphi's closes out one of their most successful seasons in a decade with a record of 11-7-1.
