The #3 Adelphi University women's soccer team topped #2 the University of New Haven, 3-2 in penalty kicks in the first round of the East Coast Conference tournament. The Panthers (13-1-4) will now face top seeded the University of Bridgeport in Sunday's final at 1:00 p.m.
The teams played even in the first half, each taking five shots.The Chargers struck first as Crystal Lindsay scored on a penalty kick in the 17th minute. The Panthers trailed 1-0 at the half.
Freshman Caitlin Morrison (Beacon, N.Y.) knotted the score at 65:25 on a cross from sophomore Lauren Slattery (Nashua, N.H.). Despite a 13-2 shot advantage the game remained tied throughout the end of regulation.The Panthers continued to hold an offensive advantage in overtime but were unable to score as they recorded their fifth tie of the season.
Due to the post-season rules, the game would be decided on penalty kicks. Junior Christine Conway stopped the first shot by Crystal Lindsay and senior Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) scored giving Adelphi a 1-0 lead. The next two shots went in for both teams with senior Catherine Wyndham (Lynbrook, N.Y.) keeping the Panthers ahead, 2-1. Conway saved the third shot by Allison Shiner as Adelphi's next shot went wide. UNH connected on its next attempt to tie the game 2-2. Senior Michelle Giovanniello (Nesconset, N.Y.) scored next on the ultimate game-winner as the fifth New Haven shot sailed high over the net.
Adelphi is looking to avenge its only loss of the season which came at the hands of Bridgeport, 3-0, on October 7. The winner will be crowned league champion.
The Panthers won the inaugural conference title in 2004 but failed to advance to the final round in 2005. In both years, Adelphi earned a NCAA Tournament berth.
