Women's Soccer Shuts Out Mercy, 4-0

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team finished its regular season with a 4-0 win over Mercy College this afternoon at Stiles Field. The Panthers improve to 12-1-4 and 7-1-2 in the league, solidifying a berth in the conference tournament. The Flyers drop to 2-13 and 2-7 in the ECC.

It took the Panthers just over three minutes to get on board as junior Denise Auer (Holbrook, N.Y.) chipped the ball over the head of the Mercy goalkeeper into the upper right corner. Senior Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) made it a 2-0 game at 6:05. Freshman Caitlin Morrison (Pine Bush, N.Y.) found the back of the net in the 9th minute as the Panthers cruised to a 3-0 half-time lead.

Adelphi's defense kept Mercy cold in the second half, not allowing a single shot on goal. The Panthers took just six shots, as compared to 11 in the first half, but managed a final goal in the 80th minute. Sophomore Melissa Fulgenzi (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) tallied her first goal of the season on a header crossed by Karen Roveto (Old Bethpage, N.Y.).

Junior goalkeeper Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) picked up one save for the win, while junior Tara Grodotzke (Rocky Point, N.Y.) closed out the final 45 minutes of play.

With today's win, the Panthers clinched a East Coast Conference tournament berth as the #3 seed. Adelphi will travel to Bridgeport, Connecticut to face #2 New Haven on Friday, October 27 at 2:00 p.m. The victor will take on the winner of the #1 Bridgeport/#4 Molloy game on Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m.
