Junior Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, NJ) registered 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 66-55 win over Merrimack College. The Panthers improve to 6-6, while the Warriors drop to 4-11.
A total of four players scored in double digits with sophomore Mary Lepore (Manhasset, NY) adding 14 points. Sophomore Gianna Smith (Hempstead, NY) and senior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, NY) chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Tied at 17 with 11:20 remaining in the first half, the Panthers rallied on a 12-2 run to lead 29-19 with 3:36 on the clock. At the intermission, Adelphi held a comfortable 32-23 advantage.
The Panthers led by as much as 18 points, 56-38, with 8:16 left in the contest. The Warriors closed to within seven points with 2:15 remaining but were unable to close the gap.
Merrimack was led by Kara Borelli with 15 points. Joelle Martin had 13 points.
Adelphi returns to conference action on Wednesday, January 11, traveling to Dowling College for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
