Women's Basketball Rallies Against Molloy, 60-49

Garden City, N.Y. - Senior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) poured in 25 points while pulling down a career-high 17 rebounds to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team past Molloy College. The Panthers extend their win streak to four, improving to 10-8 on the season and 9-2 in the NYCAC. The Lions fall to 6-12 and 6-5 in the conference.

The game selected as Newsday's Game of the Week did not disappoint as a crowd of over 250 was on hand for the contest.

Molloy opened up a 4-1 lead to start the contest before Adelphi rallied on a 17-4 run capped by a three-point basket from freshman Erin Thames (River Vale, N.J.) at 10:28. The Panthers kept the Lions at bay, leading 29-21 at the end of the half.

Adelphi struggled to start the second half, failing to connect on its first four shots. The Lions took advantage of the drought, outscoring the Panthers 9-2. A layup by Randi Bender at 14:16 gave Molloy the lead, 32-31. The Lions led by as much as five points with 11:04 in regulation. With three lead changes, the game was tied for the fourth time, 49-49 with 4:41 left on the clock. Freshman Lisa Manetta (Glendale, N.Y.) connected from beyond the arc to spur a 11-0 Panther run to seal the victory.

Manetta was the only other Panther in double figures with 10 points. Sophomore Gianna Smith pulled down nine rebounds along with six points.

Molloy was led by senior Rose Bruno with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Donna Lohrey added 11 points.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 1, hosting Queens College at 5:30 p.m.
