Women's Basketball Claws Past C.W. Post, 58-46

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team won its third straight, defeating C.W. Post, 58-46, Thursday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 9-8 overall and 8-2 in the NYCAC while the Pioneers fall to 6-12 and 5-6 in the NYCAC.

Sophomore Mary Lepore led the Panthers for the third consecutive game, recording 13 of her 19 points in the first half to go along with six rebounds and six assists.

The game got off to a slow start with both teams struggling from the field. There were four ties and three lead changes in the first half. The Panthers trailed by four, 15-19 with 5:40 remaining when sophomore Gianna Smith connected on a jumper to spur a 18-0 Adelphi run. Ten of Smith's 13 points came in the first half to go along with a team high nine rebounds. In contrast the Pioneers struggled from the field, connecting for just 7-of-30. The Panthers also forced 11 first-half turnovers, taking a 33-19 lead into the locker room.

Adelphi scored just two points over the first nine minutes of the second half, allowing C.W. Post to close to within two points, 37-35. Senior Carlyshia Hurdle collected 14 of her 18 points in the second half to help the Panthers finish on a 21-11 run to hold on for the win.

Colleen Fowler was the only player in double figures for the Pioneers with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Adelphi returns to conference action this Saturday, January 28, hosting Molloy College at 5:30 p.m.
