Sophomore Mary Lepore tallied 18 of her 23 points in the first half to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 73-64 win against St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday night. The Panthers improve to 8-8 overall and 7-2 in the NYCAC.
Sophomore Gianna Smith had 12 points and freshman Lisa Manetta registered a career-high 17 points, including 8-for-8 from the foul line.
The Panthers gots off to a slow start, trailing by five points, 13-8 at 14:57. Adelphi rallied on a 12-4 run to take the lead with 10:34 remaining. The lead changed twice more before the Panthers took the lead for good on a basket by senior Carlyshia Hurdle at 4:17. Adelphi outscored STAC 13-1 in the final minutes to lead 46-32 at the half.
The Lady Spartans rallied back in the second opening on a 22-10 run to tie the game, 56-56, with 9:17 on the clock. The lead changed twice more with the Panthers coming out on top with 1:13 in regulation. Manetta accounted for six of Adelphi's final points, all from the free throw line.
