Junior forward Ben Kenyon (Union, NJ) hit a three-pointer with 2:30 left in overtime that gave Adelphi the lead for good in a 66-64 overtime victory at Concordia College. With the win the Panthers improve to 11-4 overall and rise to 7-1 in conference play, while Concordia falls to 4-11 overall and 3-5 in the NYCAC.
In the first half neither team was able to take control by more then four points. Concordia knotted the game at 25 with 18 seconds to play on a two Ryan Dobson free throws. But, Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) knocked down a three-pointer as time expired to give the Panthers a 28-25 edge heading into intermission.
Adelphi opened the second half with a 13-5 run that included two three-pointers from Wagner to take a 41-30 lead with 13:15 to play. Concordia answered back with a quick 7-2 run to cut Adelphi's edge down to just six, 43-37, with 11:14 remaining in the game.
The Panthers responded with back-to-back jumpers from Eric Martin (Laurelton, N.Y.) and Aaron Cummings to push the margin back to 10, 47-37, with just 8:23 left in the game. Adelphi continued to control the action, holding a seven point lead, 53-46, with just three minutes left in the second half.
Concordia outscored the Panthers 7-1 over the next 2:45, pulling within one point on two Brian Antonelli free throws. Cummings converted one of two attempts from the charity stripe to put the Panthers ahead two, 55-53, with just 15 seconds to play. Concordia's Anthony Lee canned a jumper with just four seconds to play to knot the game at 55 and send it to overtime.
The Clippers scored first, taking a brief two-point lead, before Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) knocked down a jumper, followed Kenyon's three-pointer, giving Adelphi a 60-57 edge. Aaron Cummings scored Adelphi's last six points to hand the Panthers a 66-64 win.
Lee led the Clippers with 20 points and six rebounds, while David Swaby chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds. Antonelli also reached double-figures, scoring 10 points and adding six boards.
Wagner led the Panthers with 14 points and four rebounds, while Martin added 13 points. Blaize and Cummings also hit for double-figures, chipping in 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, January 24 when they travel to Sparkill, New York for a 7:30 pm meeting with St. Thomas Aquinas.
