The Adelphi women's basketball team forced 32 turnovers and got a career tying 25 points from sophomore forward Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.), but it was not enough as the Panthers fell to New Haven, 88-73. With the loss Adelphi falls to 6-8 overall and 5-2 in the conference, while New Haven remains unbeaten in the NYCAC at 6-0 and improve to 10-3 overall.
The Chargers took control from the tip, using a 16-4 run over the first 5:03 to take an early 12-point lead. Adelphi cut the margin down to nine on a Smith three-point play, but less then a minute later New Haven had the bulge up to 13, 25-12.
New Haven led by as many as 19 points, 44-25, with 4:14 remaining in the first half, before Adelphi used a 7-0 run to pull within 12, 44-32. The Panthers entered the half trailing by 17, 49-32.
The second half was more of the same as New Haven's lead ballooned to 27 points on two occasions before Adelphi cut the margin down to 15, 88-73 as the buzzer sounded.
Ashley Hilton (Skowhegan, ME) led the Charger attack with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Amanda Freeman (Tabernacle, NJ) also posted a double double, adding 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Smith led the way for Adelphi with a game-high 25 points. Carlyshia
Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) collected a double double, scoring 12 points and adding 11 rebounds, while Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.) chipped in 18 points.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 21 when they travel to Bronxville, New York for a 1:00 pm match-up with Concordia.
