Sophomore Gianna Smith poured in a career-best 25 points along with nine rebounds, but it was not enough as the Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to Dowling College, 75-67, in overtime last night. The win improved the Golden Lions to 4-8 with a 2-3 NYCAC record and handed Adelphi their first conference loss of the season (5-1, 6-7 overall).
Senior Carlyshia Hurdle was the only other Panther in double figures with 16 points. Sophomore Mary Lepore pulled down 14 rebounds and nine points.
The Golden Lions started out strong putting up 17 points to the Panthers six in the first eight minutes of play. The Panthers steadily closed the gap and a layup by Hurdle brought the game within one. Freshman Molly Turbridy answered back with a layup of her own to to send Adelphi into the locker room trailing by three (28-25).
Dowling opened the second half with back to back baskets, however the Panthers didn't let up going on a 15-8 run to tie the game for first time with 11 minutes remaining. Adelphi forged ahead and stole the lead, but back-to-back baskets by Dowling tied the contest at 48. The game would tie three more times in the last five minutes of play. The game remained deadlocked, 57-57, at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
Senior Tiffany Davis led the Golden Lions in the overtime going 2-2 from beyond the arc as freshman guard Shanasia Franklin converted 8 of 10 free throws to lead Dowling to a 75-67 victory over the undefeated Adelphi Panthers.
Franklin led the Golden Lions with 20 points on the night as unior Natasha Page and Davis each added 16 and grabbed a combined 28 rebounds.
The Panthers return to action this Saturday, January 14, hosting the University of New Haven at 5:30 p.m.
