Men's Soccer Falls In Overtime

Sept. 24, 2005

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's soccer team played Princeton to the limit, holding the Tigers scoreless for 90 minutes to force overtime, but in the 98th minute of action the Tigers found the back of the Panther net and a 1-0 win. With the loss Adelphi falls to 1-6-1 on the season, while Princeton evens their record at 3-3.

Much of the game was played in the middle of the field as both teams battled for an advantage. But neither team could gain much of an edge as regulation produced a total of 10 shots, just four of which found the goal.

Overtime was more of the same until a Princeton midfielder sent a ball into the Adelphi box. Panther goalkeeper Michael Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.) came out to collect the ball, but as he got his hands on it Kyle McHugh (Baldwin, MD) got a foot on the ball, knocking it free. Darren Spicer (Diamond Bar, CA), who was in the right place, touched the ball into an open net, giving Princeton a 1-0 win.

Hurley collected two saves in the loss, while Princeton goalie Bobby Guelich (Edina, Minn.) made two saves to pick up his second straight shutout.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, September 28 when they play host to Long Island University-Brooklyn at 4:00 pm on Stiles Field.
