Volleyball Outlasts St. Rose, 3-1

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team handed the College of St. Rose just its second loss of the season with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 6-8 on the season while the Golden Knights fall to 8-2.

Junior Rachael Cornick led the Panthers with 12 kills and 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Sophomore Lauren Flanagan was also in double digits with ten kills. Junior Deanna Maggio registered 30 assists and 10 digs.

The Panthers struggled to find their rhythm in game one, connecting on just 12 of their 36 swings. In contrast, the Golden Knights hit .385 to take the game, 30-20. After a few adjustments, Adelphi rallied back to take the next three games in convincing fashion, 30-22, 30-25, 30-25.

Trailing early on in game two, 9-13, the Panthers went on a 11-2 run to lead, 20-15, and never looked back. Game three saw Adelphi lead throughout.

The Golden Knights, down 7-4 in game four, fought back outscoring the Panthers 16-8 to lead 21-15. The Panthers roared back taking the lead for good on a kill by sophomore Kathleen Creegan, 26-25. St. Rose committed three errors in the final four points as Adelphi took the game and the victory.

Both teams were marred by reception errors with St. Rose totaling 15 and Adelphi 14. Freshman Erica Valeriano led the Panthers with seven service aces to go along with 10 digs.

St. Rose was led by Jessica Carrington with 14 kills and nine digs. Stephanie Brink added 12 kills.

Adelphi returns to conference action on Thursday, September 22, traveling to the University of Bridgeport for a 7:00 p.m. match-up.
