Freshman Stephen Fregosi (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal with less then ten minutes left to tie the game at one, but could not hold Syracuse, falling 2-1. With the loss Adelphi falls to 1-3 on the season, while Syracuse remains unbeaten at 4-0.
Syracuse outshot Adelphi in the first half by the count of 4-0 and held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks but could not break through and both teams entered halftime scoreless. The Orange finally got on the board in the 75th minute when Issac Collings (Oriskany, N.Y ) collected a pass from Mike McCallion (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and put a shot on goal from 30 yards out that beat Michael Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.) top left corner.
The Panthers knotted the score at one in the 81st minute when Fregose placed a shot top shelf past Rich Scheer (Livingston, NJ) off of a Rob Philippou (Manhasset, N.Y.). Syracuse scored what would prove to be the game winner in the 87th when Pete Rowley (Reading, PA), beating Hurley high on the right side.
Hurley collected five saves in the game, while Scheer and Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) combined for one save in the win.
Adelphi returns to action on Friday, September 16 when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to compete in the Long Island University Soccer Classic. The Panthers will meet Sacramento State at 5:00 pm.
