Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. -
Adelphi's scored their only goal of the game just minutes before halftime, but it proved to be enough as the Panthers shutout visiting Manhattan 1-0 to open the season with a win. With the win Adelphi starts the season on a high with a record of 1-0, while the Jaspers fall to 0-1.
Adelphi got the first really good scoring opportunity of the game in the 16th minute of action. Manhattan was putting pressure on the Panther goal when Adelphi took possession of the ball. Senior Matt Smith (Warwick, N.Y.) ended up with the ball and sent an outstanding pass through the Manhattan defense to a streaking Dieudonne Nonga (Douala, Cameroon). Nonga corralled the ball but Jasper goalkeeper Dashiell Parsons (Short Hills, N.J.) came up big, stopping Nonga cold.
Manhattan produced the next dangerous opportunity in the 35th minute of play when they were awarded a free kick at the top of the Panther box. After some planning Manhattan ripped a shot off the free kick but it was halted by Adelphi's wall.
The Panthers finally broke through and got on the scoreboard in the 42nd minute of play. Adelphi was pressuring Manhattan's goal when junior Ron Forman (Massapequa, N.Y.) slid the ball to Nonga, who beat Parsons low to the near post.
The second half was played very even with both teams getting a few good opportunities at goal, but Adelphi's defense made the 1-0 lead stand up. Senior Michael Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.) picked up six saves and the shutout, while Parsons made four stops for Manhattan.
Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, September 4 when they play host to visiting St. Francis (N.Y.) College at 1:00 pm.
