Garden City, N.Y. -
The Long Island Rough Riders of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) second division have three former Adelphi Panthers on the roster and one on the bench. Rough Riders Head Coach Ronan Wiseman '88 and players Paul Caffrey '90, Gary Sullivan and Tal Sheinfeld '05 are all former Panther players.
Wiseman, a long-time Adelphi men's soccer assistant coach, played for the Panthers from 1985-88 and took over the Head Coaching duties for the Rough Riders in 2004. In his first season with Long Island he guided the team to a third place finish in the Atlantic Division and an 8-11-1 overall record. This season the Rough Riders are 7-10 under Wiseman and sitting in sixth place overall in the USL second division.
Caffrey competed for Adelphi from 1987-90, and was a second-team All-America selection in 1990. Caffrey was also an All-Northeast selection that same year and has been a member of the Rough Riders for three seasons. In 2005 Caffrey has seen action in three games, making one start and scored a goal and an assist.
Former Colorado Rapids fifth round draft pick Sullivan has returned to Long Island after a one-year stint with the Rapids. In Colorado Sullivan saw action in 16 games and made four starts for a team that finished 10-9-11. Sullivan anchored the Panther defense from 2000-03, earning three All-Conference and three All-Northeast selections. Sullivan has appeared in seven games for Long Island this season, making six starts and chipped in one goal.
Rounding out the Adelphi influence is newly signed Sheinfeld, an All-Conference selection in 2004. Sheinfeld led the Panthers in points (23), goals (8) and assists (7) last season and signed his first professional contract with Long Island this summer.
"It's a great opportunity for me to play at the next level," Sheinfeld said. "It also gives me the chance to prove I can play professionally in the United States."
The Rough Riders return to action in their final home game of the season on Friday, August 5th at 7:00 pm. Long Island will take on Western Mass Pioneers at Mitchell Field. For more information or tickets to the game log onto: www.rough-riders.com.
